Syrah / Shiraz wine grape

Syrah / Shiraz
Syrah is one of France’s oldest varieties, with many believing it has been grown here since Roman times.  Unblended, it is responsible for some of the world’s greatest reds in the Northern Rhône, and is a vital component of Southern Rhône blends like Châteauneuf-du-Pape.  Increasing plantings further south in Languedoc-Roussillon are improving their blended reds too.  Now one of the truly international varieties, it has proven very successful (as Shiraz) in Australia, Argentina and California.
Typically Syrah is very deep in colour and has blackberry flavours.  In cooler climates the tannin levels can be very high, with an inky quality to the fruit and strong notes of black pepper.  Hot climate Shiraz is more full bodied, with softer tannins and earthy, leathery flavours accompanied by spice notes more akin to liquorice and anise.  Both styles can age very well.
