Minho

The Minho river forms the border between the northern edge of Portugal and Spain, and gives its name to Portugal’s most northerly wine-growing region, extending from the border south to the Douro river. This is Vinho Verde country, and shares the wet, fairly cool, Atlantic-influenced climate of Spain’s Rias Baixas just across the border.

The grape varieties are similar, too: Alvarinho (called Albariño in Spain), Trajadura (Treixadura), and Loureiro (Loureira). Alvarinho is largely planted in the north of the region, with Vinho Alvarinho being a speciality of the Monção e Melgaço subregion along the Upper Minho river.

Unlike in Rias Baixas, there are black grapes grown here too, producing the rarely-exported red Vinho Verde (verde means green, but refers to the underripeness of the grapes rather than to their colour). It’s something of an acquired taste, but oddly appropriate with local dishes like Bacalhau - salted dried cod.

Quinta do Feital

Portuguese estate Quinta do Feital is the brainchild of Spanish winemaker Marcial Dorado. A native of Galicia just over the border into Spain, his search for the perfect spot to grow his region’s beloved Albariño grape led him across the Minho river into Portugal, where the grape is just as widely planted but called Alvarinho.

Here he bought a vineyard planted with 70-year-old Alvarinho vines in the Monção e Melgaço sub-region, traditionally regarded as the best part of the Minho region. From this he produces the estate’s flagship white, Dorado, at Quinta do Feital’s much-renovated gravity-fed winery in the village of Paderne near Melgaço.

In 2002 Marcial purchased a second vineyard, a glorious natural amphitheatre of wines on a rare outcropping of schist in Seixas near the mouth of the Minho. This was already planted with old-vine Trejadura, but Marcial has supplemented this with new plantings of Alvarinho on the upper terraces. This vineyard provides the grapes for the estate’s second wine, Auratus.
