Kleine Zalze wine producer
Kleine Zalze is an historic Stellenbosch estate which was founded in 1685. Records show that there were over 700 vines planted by 1695. But wine production remained only a small part of the estate's output for the next three centuries until it was bought by the Basson family in 1996.
Kobus Basson, the current owner, embarked on a vineyard planting program using those grape varieties shown to be most suitable by an analysis of the soils around the estate. The new plantings were mainly Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, but the older Chenin Blanc vineyards were retained. Continued investment since then has paid off in a string of awards for Kleine Zalze wines in recent years, both in South Africa's ferociously competitive wine shows and internationally.
