Caserío Bengoetxe wine producer
Bengoetxe means “come home” in Basque and is the name of the farmhouse that appears on the label, which has been home to the Etxeberria family for generations. The farm had a long history of wine production but this ceased, as it did for so many Basque Country producers, after the double blows of phylloxera and the civil war..
The vineyards were pulled up and the farm was dedicated to dairy farming until 2001, when Iñaki and Rosa Maria Etxeberria replanted 3.5 hectares of south-facing clay slope with Hondarrabi Zuri, Petit Courbu and Gros Manseng, and began to make Txakoli in their garage.
Not that they were allowed to call it Txakoli at first. Bengoetxe lies in Olaberria, about 20 km inland from the coastal town of Getaria, heart of the Getariako Txakolina DO (Denominación de Origen) and around which all the remaining producers were closely clustered. After an arduous battle with the regulators to prove that Olaberria had been part of the historical wine-producing region, they were granted DO status in 2008.
The vineyard was farmed organically from the start and in 2007 became the first producer in the Basque Country to gain full organic certification.
