Adalia, Valpolicella

Adalia, Valpolicella

Most popular red of 2016

Come on, Prince Charming! ’Ella (Valpolicella that is) is being left on the shelf while her butch and beefy stepsisters Ripasso and Amarone steal the limelight. Just like her near-namesake Cinders, she’s a delicate and unassuming beauty who’ll be the perfect partner at any ball… or dinner.

Light-bodied and unoaked, this will benefit from being served a little cooler than most reds – about 15°C – to emphasise its refreshingly clean fruit.  Try popping the pouch in the fridge for 30 to 50 seconds before pouring.
With its lightness, freshness and absence of tannin, this is a red that you can happily drink on its own.  But it ticks all the food-friendliness boxes: moderate alcohol, fully dry, pure fruit flavours, unoaked, high acidity, low in tannin… you could happily pair this wine with any dish except dessert.
The high acidity makes it particularly suited to sharp flavours like tomatoes and salad dressings, which often present a problem for wine.  Chilli heat is another tricky characteristic which this wine will take in its stride, thanks to its moderate alcohol and low tannin.  So try it with fiery pasta dishes like Arrabiata, Puttanesca or Aglio, Olio e Peperoncino.
Meaty or mushroomy risottos will also work really well with this wine.  So will summery salads, or pizza.  If you just want something to nibble on, bruschetta will fit the bill perfectly.
