Tramin, Lagrein, Alto Adige

Tramin, Lagrein, Alto Adige

very berry! Italy's Austrian red

Italy’s northernmost region, the Alto Adige (or Südtirol to its German-speaking locals) was part of Austria until a century ago.  This tiny Alpine region is best known for its whites, but in warmer sites they grow Lagrein, a unique black grape found nowhere else.  Its minerally purple wine is quite Austrian in style: more Blaufränkisch than Brunello.
This one comes from much-awarded Cantina Tramin (20 times winners of Tre Bicchieri!) and its beguiling nose is filled with dark berries and spice.  Clean and refreshing despite its intensity, you can almost taste the pure mountain air that surrounds Tramin’s sun-soaked and steeply-terraced vineyards.

Serve this lightly-oaked red at cool room temperature: 16°C to 18°C.  Now that normal English summer service (grey and wet) has been resumed, there’s no need to chill the pouch – just snip and pour.
Cantina Tramin recommend this with game, but I reckon that’s because Lagrein is the nearest thing to a big red the Südtirol has, and regional pride forbids drinking wine from elsewhere!
They also suggest “red meat with English cooking”.  I suspect that means roast beef, which would be a good match: dark berries, medium body, fully dry and moderate alcohol could equally well describe old-school claret.
A plate full of cold meats and hard cheeses would be perfect, especially if it featured speck, the South Tyrolean take on cured ham.
