Viano, Contra Costa County, Cabernet Sauvignon

Cal-Ital Cab from Contra Costa County

It was International Cabernet Sauvignon Day last Thursday ‐ but it was a white week here at DC, so we’re catching up now.  In more ways than one: we’ve only featured one Cab Sauv before, and we’ve never had a wine from California!  This week we remedy both omissions with this pure Cabernet from one of the oldest family-owned wineries in the Golden State.
The Viano clan arrived from Piedmont a century ago, settling in Contra Costa County, the “opposite shore” of San Francisco Bay.  Combining sun-baked fruit with the earthy complexity of good mature claret, their classy Cabernet is remarkably restrained by Californian standards, both in its 13% alcohol and its modest price-tag.
This classic came on the radio as I wrote up my tasting notes…

Serve this savoury, moderately-oaked red at cool room temperature: 18°C.  Give the pouch just half a minute in the fridge if it’s a really hot day.  (Unlikely, as I look out of window at grey skies while writing this.)
Fully dry with fine acidity, this characterful red is made for food.  Staying true to their Italian heritage, the Viano family recommend meaty, tomato and herb based pasta dishes.  While this wine would indeed be great with bolognaise, it would also suit the traditional partners for claret: rich casseroles, roast beef, or Sunday lunches in general.
