Rabl, Grüner Veltliner, 'Langenlois'

Austria’s groovy green grape

Grüner Veltliner (commonly shortened to ‘Gru V’, pronounced “groovy”) is Austria’s signature grape variety.  It occupies a third of all Austrian vineyards, yet is found almost nowhere else.  Grüner means ‘green’, and its distinctive dry wine is filled with crisp green flavours: green peppers, green beans, cucumber, celery and limes, along with perhaps its most defining characteristic, white pepper.
Here’s a classic example, from terraced vineyards around the famous wine town of Langenlois on the River Kamp, a tributary of the Danube.  Family-owned Weingut Rabl have been making wine here for over a century, and blend this cuvée from multiple vineyards picked at different times to provide the perfect combination of vibrant acidity, ripe fruit, and rich spice.

Serve this elegant, unoaked, medium-bodied white fairly cool, between 8°C and 10°C, but not so cold that the glass mists up.  Give the pouch three minutes out of the fridge (and out of the envelope) before pouring.
Grüner Veltliner has been championed by sommeliers because it’s so good with food.  You’re rather more likely to find it on a restaurant wine list than on the supemarket shelf.  Yet it doesn’t require food like some wines do; you could very happily enjoy this one as an aperitif.
It will go with just about anything, including really hard-to-match dishes with a hint of bitterness about them, like watercress soup.  It’s especially good with spicy Asian food.  Austrians would pair it with their national dish, schnitzel with potato salad.  But it would be even better with a creamy risotto primavera.
