Argentina’s other great black grape

Bonarda is even more Argentinian than Malbec.  Despite the Italian-sounding name it’s originally from alpine Savoie in eastern France, where only a few vineyards remain.  Mountains do seem to suit it, for there’s almost as much Bonarda as Malbec in Argentina’s high Andean valleys.
It hasn’t been taken as seriously as its rival and considerably less is exported.  Yet from old vines it can produce intensely fruity wines that are just as dense and concentrated but much more approachable young.
This one comes from 60-year-old vines planted over a kilometre up in the heart of Luján de Cuyo, traditionally regarded as the source of Argentina’s best reds.  Made by rising star Matías Riccitelli, this richly-fruited red has both power and polish, showing just what this under-appreciated grape can achieve.

Serve this full-bodied, oak-aged red at the full 18°C.  That should be room temperature unless you’ve turned your central heating up high.  It’s so smooth you could happily drink it on its own, but it will really suit roast meats and hearty pasta dishes, especially with richly flavoured sauces.  Try it with lasagna.
