The Tasting


The wine is a deep crimson, still showing some purple at the rim despite being nearly four years old.
 
It has a fine nose ‐ fresh, floral and herby ‐ with plenty of white pepper and iniseed spice overlaying ripe red and black fruits: blackberry, plum, and raspberry fruit pastilles.  There’s a nice balance here between the deep ripe fruit and the fresher herbs and spices.  Oak is very subtle, almost undetectable: just a hint of smoke.
 
In the mouth this is fully dry, with very fresh cherryish acidity.  It’s not much more than medium-bodied, belying its 14.5% alcohol.  Lots of peppery spice, which is partly due to the alcohol, seasons the plum and blackberry fruit.  There’s a hint of a deeper, more purple fruit ‐ blueberry ‐ which is probably due to the Malbec.
 
Tannins are soft and round, even fleshy.  There’s plenty of them but they’re not at all astringent.  They do add a touch of bitterness to the spicy finish, which is very dry and less warm than I expected given the high alcohol.  This is a wine that’s beautifully balanced, but it’s balanced for food.


Assessment


This has a lot in common with the last red we featured from Western Australia, Apostrophe Possessive Reds’ by Larry Cherubino. Both are coolish-climate red blends based on Shiraz and focussed firmly on food.  Both taste lighter than their 14.5% alcohol and don’t taste of oak despite being barrel-aged.  This wine is perhaps a little richer and fruitier, which is probably down to the Malbec component.
 
Margaret River is renowned for producing elegant, ageworthy, Bordeaux-inspired reds with more restraint than the blockbuster Australian norm.  This consummately food-friendly wine is a great illustration of that, despite being Shiraz-based rather than a Bordeaux blend.  So… if I were having tea with a Gruffalo, I’d bring along some dark Deep Woods.

Other notes
Almost unoaked. Slight reduction so best decanted. Great balance, but needs food. At peak, but will hold for a year or two.
