Verdello wine grape

Not to be confused with the better-known Portuguese Verdelho, the Italian grape Verdello is native to Umbria and is used in the blend for the well-known white Orvieto.  Like Verdelho, it is named for the dark green colour of its grapes up to veraison, the point at which they ripen and change colour.  The same is true of all grapes, but since Verdello is a very late ripener its bunches remain green after those of other varieties turn golden.  Rarely used on its own, it contributes its high acidity to blends.
