Gerovassiliou Viognier

My Big Fat Greek Viognier 2

This was so good back in November 2016 that we simply had to feature the sequel – the next vintage in the series.  The wine itself isn’t fat, but the bottle it comes in is (perhaps appropriately for a Greek wine) of Herculean proportions: so tall and wide that it won’t fit in our wine rack.  Gratifyingly the wine inside is cast in the same heroic mould: absolutely bursting with fruit, flowers and spice.  And what a nose!  Any hopeful bridesmaid trying to catch a bouquet with this much in it would be floored under the weight.

Big oaked whites like this should usually be served only just cool, but Viognier likes to be chilled.  Serve this one quite cool, at 10°C to 12°C.  Give the pouch four minutes out of the fridge to warm up before pouring.

Viognier’s low acidity and intense perfume can make its wines tricky to match with food.  Fortunately this one is lovely on its own, but it also has enough zippy freshness and elegance to be comparatively food-friendly.  You need bold flavours in the dish, though; this wine will stomp all over delicate white fish.

Try stronger-flavoured shellfish like lobster and crab, especially in Asian dishes whose spicy fragrance is mirrored by the wine.  That old Chinese restaurant favourite, prawns with ginger and spring onion, will work beautifully – and you can probably get it delivered.

On a different tack, this wine is also a great foil for more strongly-flavoured vegetables in salads, like hard-to-match asparagus.
