What our expert thought of Fratelli, Classic Chenin

the tasting

The Tasting

Despite this being a blend, it lives up to its name with a classic Chenin nose: broad and honeyed, with aromas of peach and lemon backed by a minerally suggestion of bookpaper.  There’s just a hint of nettly green herbs from the Sauvignon Blanc.
Although there is honey on the nose it doesn’t smell sweet, and that’s confirmed by the palate which is fully dry with very clean and refreshing acidity.  Despite the modest 12% ABV this is slightly more than medium-bodied, and that weight balances the acidity nicely.  There’s lots of green apple fruit here, supported by not-too-ripe white peach, some lemon, and a touch of exotic passionfruit.
The mouthwatering and spicy finish is quite long and, like the nose, slightly honeyed without being sweet, ending on some lipsmacking salty minerality.

As the label says, this is Classic Chenin with its honeyed scent, full palate and zippy green apple acidity.  The Sauvignon influence is more subtle, adding some aromatic greenery to the nose and that passionfruit note to the palate.
The result is vibrant and delicious, with food-friendly acidity matched by flavour intensity.  A wine needs plenty of both to partner Indian cuisine, and this one nails it.  It might be auto-suggestion, but the spices on the finish really do seem Indian to me, and I definitely feel a craving for some curry now!
