It’s British Tourism Week, so we’re taking a staycation in Oxfordshire to introduce you to our first ever English wine.  Nestled on the south bank of the Thames just to the north of Wallingford, Brightwell Vineyard is actually our closest wine producer: only fifteen miles from Decanting Club HQ.
 
Produced only in the best vintages like 2014, this golden and succulent white is made from late-harvest Huxelrebe grapes.  Filled with ripe pineapple and melon flavours, it proves there are at least some benefits to global warming.

Serve this off-dry white quite cool, between 8°C and 10°C. Three minutes out of the fridge should do it, or twice that long if you pour it straight into a glass.
 
You don’t need food for this one; its lovely balance of sweetness and acidity makes it perfect for sipping on its own.  You could try pairing it with shellfish like scallops, especially if there is some sweetness in the (perhaps Oriental) sauce.
 
Brightwell themselves suggest dessert, but take care because it isn’t that sweet: fresh fruit would work, with or without cream.  It would also make a fine accompaniment for not-too-stinky (goat’s) cheese.
