Brightwell, Oxford Regatta

Brightwell, Oxford Regatta

German bunch win Boat Race for Oxford

This is English Wine Week, but it’s also a red wine week here at DC.  (Red wine… in our climate?)  We’ve overcome this calendar clash thanks to some cutting-edge German technology.  The cuttings in question are of the Dornfelder grape, bred in Germany to boldly ripen where no red has ripened before.

Our old friends at Brightwell Vineyard have used Dornfelder to craft this convincing red, named in honour of the Henley Royal Regatta which takes place just a few miles downstream of their Thames-side vineyards.  The Regatta’s first royal patron was Prince Albert – another German export that did very well over here.

Herby and refreshing, this lightly-oaked wine is full of red berry fruit.  If we didn’t know it was English, we’d swear this was a classy French red from the Loire.

Here Mr. B demonstrates the correct attire (and accent) to adopt when drinking this wine…

Serving

Serve this charming, light-bodied red quite cool, at 14°C to 15°C.  Take the pouch out of the envelope and pop it in the fridge for just a couple of minutes before pouring.

It doesn’t require food but its crisp edge and summer berry flavours make it a perfect picnic wine.  Try it with classic English outdoor fare: cold cuts, pork pies, Scotch eggs, and a slab of mature Cheddar.  It would also work well with a traditional Sunday lunch.
